Homes 'would double' village size
Porthyrhyd

A planned housing development would almost double the size of a village in Carmarthenshire, residents claim.

A meeting will be held in Porthyrhyd on Wednesday to discuss an application for 52 new homes near the village square.

Some residents say it will destroy the character of the rural community but the final decision will rest with the county's planning committee.

Developers say the plan is for a wide range of housing, including homes for families and first-time buyers.

The local community council has called an emergency meeting for Wednesday evening.

Councillor Wyn Evans said it was likely a public meeting would follow with the developer Lovell invited to attend.

Rob Jones, who runs the village post office and store, said if the development went ahead he and the two village pubs may see extra businesses.

But he added: "We moved here 17 years ago to an attractive village location where the pace of life is just about right.

"The village has seen development over the years but this plan would effectively almost double the size of the village.

"Local people I have spoken to are against that."

He said the application site was about 100 yards from the village square and such a large development would totally alter the character of the community.

A spokesman for Lovell said: "Our plans are for a wide range of housing, including properties for first-time buyers and small, medium and large sized family houses."
