Television plant 'to axe 98 jobs'
Orion Electric plant, Margam, south Wales
The plant makes plasma televisions for global brands
A union says almost 100 workers are to be laid off at the Orion Electrics plant in Margam, near Port Talbot.

The Japanese-owned manufacturing plant employs 180 people and makes DVD players and plasma televisions for some of the world's best-known brands.

According to Amicus union, 98 jobs will be lost at the end of the year. It says the losses are especially disappointing in the run-up to Christmas.

Nobody from the company was available for comment.

The union is blaming rapid changes in television technology for the job cuts.

Amicus Divisional Officer Norman Southwell said: "Amicus is continuing to consult with Orion Electrics to try and find a way to mitigate these job losses.

"We will also be urging the company to continue to look for alternative markets and so hopefully save some of these jobs."

According to the Orion Electric website, the Margam plant was established in March 1986 and employed up to 600 people.
