Aspinalls will be opening a casino at Salubrious Place shortly
Swansea may have two new casinos after the city made the shortlist for one of the UK's new style licences.

The city has been chosen on a list of 31 potential sites for 16 large or small casinos, with jackpot limits of 4,000, by the Casino Advisory Panel.

These would be smaller operations than the so-called "super-casino" which Cardiff is in the running for.

A casino is already being built at Salubrious Place near Wind Street and is set to open in Swansea shortly.

A site has yet to be identified for the new style casino if Swansea makes the final list, which is expected to be announced in December.

SMALLER CASINO BIDDERS
Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth, Brighton, Canterbury, Chelmsford, Dartford, Dudley, Dumfries and Galloway,
East Lindsey, Great Yarmouth, Hastings, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Luton
Mansfield, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Newham, NE Lincs, Peterborough
Restormel, Scarborough, Sefton, Solihull, Southampton, South Tyneside, Swansea
Thurrock, Torbay and Wolverhampton

A total of 67 local authorities in England and Wales applied to the panel.

The city council said it considered the likely impact and benefits of having another casino before submitting its application.

Leader Chris Holley said: "We are very pleased to have reached the shortlist.

"The benefits of having a larger casino would be a major boost to Swansea, our local economy and our aspiration to be a distinctive European city by 2020."

He said the location would be a matter for developers when making proposals to the council.

National chain Aspinalls is already building a casino at Salubrious Place.

The entertainment complex, which is nearing completion, also includes a multi-screen cinema as well as restaurants and bars.
