3M produces the adhesive bands used in nappies |
Around 90 jobs could be lost from a factory near Swansea. The American company 3M, which makes products like tape and adhesives, aims to reduce the 400-strong workforce at Gorseinon by the end of October.
The company said it hoped that a "sizeable proportion" of the job losses would be on a voluntary basis.
But the T&G union said it is "extremely concerned" about the job losses and the plant's long term future.
The union said 60 core staff jobs would be lost, as well as 30 temporary posts.
The site manufactures a wide range of products including nappy adhesive, car aftercare specialities and around 300 different types of tape.
'Haemorrhaging'
John Bowers, plant manager at 3M said the company faced increased competition and higher costs.
"Faced with raw material price increases and aggressive challenges from overseas manufacturers, the Gorseinon plant needs to improve its competitive position and increase the flexibility of its resourcing capability in order to meet fluctuating business demands.
"It is always difficult to make decisions which affect people's livelihoods and we will, of course, be doing everything possible to help those affected secure alternative employment."
The company said other steps being taken to improve the site's competitive position included closing most temporary staff positions and reviewing shift patterns.

Andy Richards, T& G regional organiser said the union was concerned with the losses of "more quality jobs from the community and Wales".
"Wales TUC will be organising an emergency conference in October to debate the haemorrhaging of manufacturing jobs."
Mr Richards confirmed the union was consulting with the company and it was hoping for voluntary losses.
Around 90 jobs were lost at the factory four years ago, as part of worldwide workforce cuts of 5,000.
There has been an adhesives factory at the Gorseinon site for more than 50 years.
