Tug-of-war over festival site
2000 National Eisteddfod

Carmarthenshire's two largest towns are at loggerheads over which should stage the Urdd eisteddfod when it visits the county in two years.

Councillors in Llanelli say they are best equipped to hold the event which attracts up to 100,000 visitors.

But people in Carmarthen say their town is more central and that, as Llanelli hosted the 2000 National Eisteddfod, it should be their turn in 2007.

The Urdd committee is drawing up a shortlist of sites before deciding.

Llanelli's Festival Fields, developed for the 2000 National Eisteddfod, has won the backing of Carmarthenshire Council.

Llanelli councillor and deputy leader Martin Morris said it would be ideal for the eisteddfod.

"It has already proved to be a huge success in hosting major events as the National Eisteddfod in 2000, and many of our own festivals.

"The site can easily accommodate thousands of people and has all the facilities necessary to host the Urdd Eisteddfod.

Showground

"It would bring many benefits to people and businesses across the county, not just in the Llanelli area."

But there is a growing call in the west of the county for the showground at Nantyci, home to the United Counties Show, to be selected.

St Clears, Cynwyl Elfed and Llangunnor community councils are among those campaigning for the site.

Clerk to St Clears community council, Elfyn Williams, said: "There are very good road links as it's close to the A40, there are good parking facilities and the rail links to Carmarthen are good.

Shortlist

"It has been used on previous occasions for county and national events that have proved successful.

"It's in a central location and will give the whole county ownership of the event."

This year's festival was held at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff and the 2006 event will take place at Ruthin in north Wales.

A spokesman for the Urdd said various sites in Carmarthenshire were being looked at including Llanelli, Carmarthen and Llandovery.

"A shortlist will be made before the final announcement," he added.
