Referendum call over road closure
St Catherine Street
Campaigners are opposing the closure of St Catherine Street
People opposing plans to shut one of Carmarthen's main roads to accommodate a 50m retail centre have voted to demand a referendum on the issue.

Developers propose to close St Catherine Street to traffic during daytime as part of a redevelopment.

Campaigners opposed to the move claim it will force drivers onto quiet back streets not suited to heavy traffic.

It is expected the referendum, confined to people living in Carmarthen town, will be held next month.

The vote calling for a referendum at Monday night's meeting was unanimous.

Local councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths said ahead of the meeting: "There's much disquiet here within the town itself because people can't believe that the closure of St Catherine Street is possible.

"This is a main thoroughfare through the centre of the town and traffic would then have to use other smaller streets to pass from one end of the town to the other."

Carmarthenshire Council said the development would increase the number of visitors to the town by 30% when completed.

Executive board member Clive Scourfield has stated it is vital if the town was to grow.

"This development will take Carmarthen forward into the future, create jobs, provide much needed leisure facilities and an even better shopping experience," he said.
