Beach ban on wind buggies lifted
Beach Buggy
Buggies have been banned from Pendine since July 2004
Sand buggies are being allowed back on a west Wales beach for the first time since they were banned last year.

Wind sports enthusiasts were kicked off Pendine after a report by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned of the dangers of an accident.

It provoked anger as people from across the UK would travel to use the beach, considered ideal for the activities.

Now Carmarthenshire Council and a local land sailing club have drawn-up rules to regulate wind craft on the sands.

A three-mile-wide zone east of the main beach slipway has been designated for wind sports.

Buggies will only be allowed on it during weekday evenings and at the weekends and will be limited to 30 at any one time.

All enthusiasts will also have to have insurance but they have welcomed the agreement.

A spokesman for the Carmarthenshire Land Sailing Club said people needed to stick to the same rules that had been introduced at Pembrey to resolve a similar problem there.

"It's been a long time in the making but, thanks to a huge amount of effort and negotiations, members have been granted permission to buggy on Pendine once more," said a spokesman.

The ban was introduced last July.

Council parks manager Elwyn Hughes said: "Pendine is an excellent land sailing venue and we are pleased to be able to give residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy the sport."
