Hollywood showing for family film
Powerless cinema poster
My hope is that we will get some sort of distribution deal
Director Matt Daniels
A film made for 5,000 in which a west Wales family play all the lead roles is getting a Hollywood screening.

Powerless, shot in Pembrokeshire, will be shown at the Chinese Six Theatres on Hollywood Boulevard on Monday.

It starred five members of the Wilkins family and has developed a following at film festivals in the UK and overseas.

Director Matt Daniels and lead actor Matt Wilkins will fly to California for the showing at the theatre complex famous for its handprint walk of fame.

The venue is part of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre complex which used to be the setting for the Oscars.

Daniels said: "I never really imagined when we were filming in Pembrokeshire on our little camcorder with no money that we would be going to Hollywood with the film.

"The Chinese Six Theatres are really at the centre of Hollywood and we will walk over the hand prints of Marilyn Monroe to get into the cinema.

"If nothing else happens that's fine - you can't get much better than that."

The film, which follows a family's fight for survival in the aftermath of a blackout which paralyses Britain, was premiered at the Cardiff Screen Festival last November.

"We've done nine film festivals since then, taken the movie to Cannes and the Edinburgh Film Festival and it had it's US premier a couple of weeks ago," added Daniels.

The first US showing came at the Temecula International Film Festival in California.

"At Temecula we got to walk down a red carpet where we were introduced which was a really big rush.

"What's been very interesting is that there is a big difference between a film festival there because there are a lot more people who are part of the business and it's a lot easier to make contacts.

"My hope is that we will get some sort of distribution deal, whether it's a big one or a small one or limited art house release I don't really mind."

In between promoting Powerless, former Swansea University student Daniels is writing his second feature and has given up his day job to run his own production company.

"We'll be in Hollywood for a week. The screening on Monday and then networking sessions and the festival's award ceremony on Saturday night," he added.
