A thousand new homes could be built on Llanelli's coast in a plan to attract 200m private investment to the town.

The area has been re-branded Llanelli Waterside in a move to follow Swansea's SA1 and the Cardiff Bay developments.

Those behind the "masterplan" also aim to attract new businesses and leisure facilities creating up to 1,500 jobs.

At Thursday's launch Assembly Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies said the plan would build on major changes already made to Llanelli's coast.

Five locations in the town - North Dock, Delta Lakes, Old Castle Works, Sandy Water Park and Machynys - have been identified as key sites.

These would now be marketed internationally with the aim of creating 520,000 sq ft of business, office space and leisure developments, including a multi-screen cinema, hotels, bars and restaurants.

The partners, Carmarthenshire Council, Welsh Development Agency and Assembly Government said there had already been interest in many of the sites.

Enough land for an extra 1,000 homes would be made available to housing developers.

There has been almost 50m in private investment over the last three years with the Nicklaus golf course and housing development, as well as the 25m residential complex at North Dock by Mclean Homes.

Mr Davies said: "There has been significant private sector investment in the Llanelli area over the last three years.

"High profile developments like the Nicklaus golf course clearly illustrate the strong commercial confidence already evident in Llanelli."

More than 90m in public sector money has been spent transforming the coast since 1990.

Council chief executive Mark James said: "We know that there is an appetite for future development here and we have all the pieces in place to move that forward.

"We know that we are going to deliver this as what we have done so far has proven we've been successful to date."

Speaking after the launch Nigel Bevan, mayor of Llanelli, said it was essential the plan delivered the promised jobs.

"We need to have good quality, well-paid jobs in Llanelli and hopefully these exciting developments will bring them.

"It was said that they were wiping away the industrial decline of the town. Hopefully this is an opportunity to bring back some of those jobs that have been taken away."
