The centre was closed in November 2003 |
A senior Swansea Council official has been temporarily suspended over the handling of the closure of the city's leisure centre. David Evans, the authority's director of regeneration, was in charge of the leisure department when the attraction closed in November 2003.
A report that alleged managerial failings was discussed on Thursday.
Mr Evans' role will be investigated by an outside officer who will report to a cross-party disciplinary committee.
The suspension follows an extraordinary full council meeting on Thursday.
Councillors discussed a 50-page report published last week by the council's monitoring officers into the closure of the leisure centre.
The closure of Swansea's leisure centre has caused controversy in the city |
It found Mr Evans was warned in March 2001 that many items of equipment and the electrical services at the centre had 'deteriorated and were in very poor condition.'
And it found concerns about the state of the building, opened by the Queen in 1977, were not reported to other senior officials or councillors.
The report made 17 recommendations resulting from the centre's demise.
These include a review of the condition of all council-owned buildings, the need to introduce a professionally managed maintenance system and a review of health and safety procedures.
The centre was one of the most popular visitor attractions in Wales, attracting over 750,000 people a year.
Seven months after it closed the ruling Labour group lost control of the city council for the first time in 28 years with the leisure centre seen as a key factor.
