DIY film gets festival premier
Film set
Most of the film was shot on location in Pembrokeshire
A film with a cast made up almost entirely of one family and shot mainly in Pembrokeshire will be premiered at the Cardiff Screen Festival.

Director Matt Daniels cast real life family, the Wilkins, for his first full-length feature which was made on a shoestring.

Set in a remote part of Wales, Powerless follows a family's fight for survival after power loss leaves them alive but alone and paralyses Britain.

The film will be shown at the festival next month which will also screen Denzil Washington's latest, The Manchurian Candidate, and Trainspotting director Danny Bolye's Millions.

Swansea University graduate Daniels said: "We are thrilled.

"It was our first choice for the film's first public screening.

"As the majority of the film was made in Wales it seems only right to premiere in Cardiff."

The lead roles are taken by Cardiff University student Bethany Wilkins and her two brothers and sisters who live in Pembrokeshire.

"When you see the characters on screen there is something beyond acting, they are a real family.

"There is a chemistry that is unique," added Daniels.

The film was shot over the course of a year with a budget of just 5,000 and using standard household equipment.

Matt Daniels said he was thrilled to be screening the film in Cardiff

"We used a hi-end domestic camcorder to shoot the film," said producer Gideon Wilkins.

"We used work-lights from a DIY store to light scenes.

"We had something to prove - we wanted to show what could really be done."

Despite the meagre budget independent producers This Can Motion Pictures secured sponsorship and product placement deals with the likes of BMW, Tesco and Sony PlayStation.

Most of the film was shot in Pembrokeshire in the shadow of the Preseli Mountains.

Daniels even got permission to close down the village of Maenclochog one morning during filming.

"This is guerrilla film-making at its best because we have not got money but we have got a product we believe in."

Powerless will be shown on 20 November, the closing day of the festival, at 1430 GMT.
