Graves relatives unhappy at wait

Relatives are unhappy about what they call the lack of communication
A woman whose family has had two gravestones laid flat in a safety move is calling for resignations over the delay in having them put back in place.

Carmarthenshire Council ordered the work on nearly 400 headstones at Ammanford cemetery because it feared the stones were a potential danger.

The authority said trials of a new resin which should hold all the stones safely in position will start soon.

Families affected by the council's work have formed an action group.

Andrea Griffiths has had the headstones of three relatives, including two baby grandchildren, laid flat.

She said an apology from the council was not enough.

"I want them to resign, I feel we've lost trust in them," she said.

"They keep promising to reinstate the headstones, and this is a fortnight ago in a meeting."

Relatives have also set up an action group.

One of the group, Heddwyn Morgan, said: "The fundamental problem is lack of communication from the council.

"If the elected members and executive are prepared to meet the action group to sort it out it might end."

The work has been held up by the need to find a special resin to fix the headstones, but work will start soon.

Richard Workman, director of technical services at Carmarthenshire Council, said they had arranged for a trial of the resin next week in one of the stonemason's yards, where other masons will be present.

"We'll have to let that (resin) cure and settle for a few days, test it again and if that works, the following week we'll be rolling out the programme of reinstatement."
