Seafront homes to tower over city

How the tower should look when it is ready in three years
More than 400 new seafront homes are to be built in Swansea - including the tallest residential building in Wales.

Plans for a 350ft tower with roof-top restaurant and 270 apartments have been lodged with the city's council.

At 29 storeys it is nearly twice the height of the BT Tower which is the current tallest building in Swansea.

Another company has unveiled plans to build 164 luxury apartments along with leisure facilities at the SA1 site in the maritime quarter of the city.

When plans for the high-rise tower at Trawler Road near the Marriott Hotel were first unveiled in September it stood at just 25 storeys.

In a detailed planning application submitted this week Dublin based developer Niall Mellon has added an extra four floors to the scheme.

Prizes are likely to range from 110,000 to 450,000 and the company said there are more than 100 buyers waiting to reserve apartments.

SA1 is unique in terms of dockland redevelopments, linking with the existing maritime quarter and city centre

Work is likely to start in the autumn.

Meanwhile Quest Property Limited has unveiled plans to create 164 contemporary waterside apartments as part of the Welsh Development Agency's (WDA) SA1 development.

SA1 will see over 1,000 apartments and houses, business and office premises along with leisure facilities built on 100 acres of land at Swansea Docks.

Matthew Stephens, spokesman for Quest, said: "We have been looking for the right project to get involved with, and there is no shortage of development opportunities, but we were particularly taken by what we saw in SA1.

"SA1 is unique in terms of dockland redevelopments, linking with the existing maritime quarter and city centre, as opposed to being stuck out on a limb, as tends to be the case with many other waterside developments."

Quest is the second large developer to secure land at SA1.

Bellway Homes is to build a range of three to seven storey buildings with one two and three bedroom apartments.
