The centre is due to be ready towards the end of 2005

It will replace the existing sports hall and swimming pool within the grounds of Ysgol Bro Gwaun, but will be open to the public.

The centre will include a 25m pool, health and fitness suites and a floodlit all-weather sports pitch.

It is hoped it will encourage more people in north Pembrokeshire to take regular exercise, as well as providing activities for holidaymakers on rainy days.

Five companies are bidding to build the centre, which is being financed by Pembrokeshire council, the Lottery's New Opportunities Fund and the Sports Council for Wales.

Construction work will start in the late spring and it will take about 14 months to build.

Fishguard councillor Brian Howells said it was much needed.

"We are very concerned, like most authorities, with the lack of fitness of people of all ages," he said.

Tourism trade

"One of the things we've tried to do with the design is make it attractive to all people of all ages.

"School pupils will still have their allotted times, but the majority of the time it will be open for the use of the public at large.

"We get a fair number of tourists in the area and people using the ferry but we have not been blessed with all-weather facilities for when it is raining so this will also be a big plus for the tourism trade."

He said the all-weather pitch would be welcomed by sports clubs.
