Jobs saved by 1m investment
Miners
Twelve mines across the UK are receiving money
More than 50 jobs have been saved and another 75 could be created at a private coalmine near Glynneath in the Swansea valley, after a 1m investment was announced.

Energybuild's Aberpergwm mine is one of 12 in Britain which will be helped with the cost of development projects.

The mine will receive 1.1m to access coal reserves and upgrade facilities - part of a 52m government investment package for the coal industry across the UK.

Energy Minister Stephen Timms said the money would help safeguard mining.

"I am delighted to announce this substantial investment which will help to preserve and create jobs in our coal industry and help secure the future of mining to 2008 and beyond."

The money is part of the new Coal Investment Aid scheme (CIA) and will help to secure work for 4,000 miners across the UK.

"Despite some difficult times in the past, there are encouraging signs for the future of the coal mining industry."

An application from Tower Colliery in Hirwaun, south Wales, is still being considered.
