Vetch pubs up for sale
Vetch Field
No decision has yet been made on the future of the Vetch
Pub landlords near Swansea's Vetch Field are selling-up before the football team moves to a new stadium at Morfa.

Three watering holes all within a goalkeeper's punt of the ground are up for sale even though the 20,000 all-seater purpose-built arena is not due for completion for another two years.

For Sale signs are up outside The Swansea Jack, The Clarence Inn and Garribaldi's, all favourites with fans.

Supporters have mixed emotions about the move, although the club says the new stadium will have restaurants and bars which will transform the rituals of match days.

It all adds to the atmosphere and I don't think it will be the same when we go to Morfa

A supporters' club house is being built as part of the Morfa development.

Swansea City chairman David Morgan said this would benefit the side as money taken over the bar will go towards the club.

"Supporters will be able to turn up hours before a match and stay hours after," he said.

"Coming to see Swansea will be a day out - not just turning up for an hour and a half every Saturday."

But lifelong supporter Paul Bevan of Brynmill said many fans would miss the pre-match build-up of a couple of pints in the Garribaldi.

"For big games there can be up to 100 people outside because it's so full," he said.

"There are always the same faces in there, although it is quiet when there's no game.

"It all adds to the atmosphere and I don't think it will be the same when we go to Morfa.

"There are not many pubs up there at the moment - I can only think of two nearby.

"I guess a lot of fans will still drink in the city and then go up to the game although I can't see many staying in the pubs around the Vetch."

No firm decision has been made on what will become of the Vetch when the Swans move home.

Under Swansea council's latest development plan, the land has been earmarked for up to 150 new homes, together with other recreation and community uses.
