Man drowns trying to save friend

A man who drowned after diving into the river Tawe in Swansea to save a friend who had got into trouble, has been named by South Wales Police as Patrick McDonagh.

Police said the 20-year-old from Gorseinon in Swansea, was with a group of friends on Thursday night just before he drowned.

The group were sunbathing in a car park when one of on the group decided to swim in the river.

Shortly after he got into trouble and it is thought Mr McDonagh dived in to try to help him but got into difficulty himself.

He was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics reached him 2120 BST at White Rock Bridge near Landore.

The man who was in difficulty made it out of the water unharmed.
