Neil Morrissey co-owns a pub and hotel in Laugharne

The star best known for the 1990s comedy Men Behaving Badly and the voice of cartoon character Bob the Builder has become a familiar face locally.

He is co-owner of a pub and hotel in the town and on Friday was invited to open a new public garden and seating area on the shore front walk to the Dylan Thomas Boathouse.

It has been built in less than a week by youngsters who gave up the first week of their summer holidays to complete the project.

"It's really heartening to see the youngsters of today can involve themselves in such a regeneration project.

The star handed out certificates to all the youngsters involved

"Over 40 kids have got involved in the building of the project over the week."

He was on good form as he handed out certificates to all the youngsters who helped and many of the girls sneaked a peck on the cheek.

Watched by a crowd of about 100 he then unveiled a plaque marking the achievement.

Mr Morrissey's latest pub The New Three Mariners opened this week and he also has a share in the Hurst Hotel.

He told BBC News Online he had been made to feel very welcome in Laugharne.

"I've been coming to Laugharne for about two years but I've becoming to Wales for about 20 since I was a student.

"It's great to come here and see people and friends.

"But I'm not allowed to call myself a Laugharney yet as I've not been living here for three years."

The garden project was funded by a lottery Millennium Award.

Youth worker Carl Morgan said the youngsters had worked very hard throughout the week in some atrocious weather conditions to get it finished.

Morrissey also took time to sign autographs

"There are many, many people to thank.

"We are delighted Neil has come here today to open it."

One of the youngsters, Sophie Treacy, said it had been a tough challenge.

"We started talking about doing it five or six months ago," she said.

"It was quite hard work but it is nice to see a change in scenery."

Morrissey is staying in the town for two weeks.
