Schoolboy wins sex shop fight

Youngsters go skateboarding near the planned sex shop
A 14-year-old schoolboy has helped win a campaign to prevent a sex shop opening in his town.

The youngster wrote to Pembrokeshire councillors urging them not to grant a licence for the establishment in Haverfordwest because he and his friends go skateboarding nearby.

His objection, along with others, was considered at a meeting of the authority's licensing committee on Thursday.

Councillors visited the site at the Olde Smithy Cafe near the main bus station and also heard representations from Darker Enterprises Ltd, the company behind the venture.

But after a lengthy discussion councillors decided not to grant the application.

Committee chairman Don Evans said the main concerns were the location of the planned shop.

"It would be inappropriate having regard to the character of the relevant locality, its dominant use being commercial, and the premises being in proximity to family shopping areas and places of worship," he said.

The teenager wrote to councillors saying a lot of youngsters went skateboarding in the area and there was a school nearby.

Haverfordwest town council also opposed the application along with several business, residents and members of the Bethany Free Church.
