Paul Daniels will now perform in the Lyric Theatre

Originally booked in at the Bro Myrddin Bowls Club, it was first moved to the leisure centre because of demand for tickets and will now be held at the 740-seat Lyric Theatre.

It is one of a series of events themed around Merlin the magician's supposed links with the town.

Organised by the county council and supported by the Carmarthenshire Tourist Association, chamber of commerce, town council and town forum, it is hoped the festival on 21 June, which is mid-summer's day, will become an annual event.

The Welsh for Carmarthen is Caerfyrddin, which translates to Myrddin's (or Merlin's) fort.

Legend has it that the magician from Arthurian legend is buried on a hill overlooking Carmarthen.

Other activities include competitions and activities in Carmarthen Park, street entertainers in the town centre plus an attempt to assemble a record number of Harry Potter look-a-alikes outside Ottakar's book shop in Guildhall Square.

Sell-out

Organisers believe not enough is made of Carmarthen's links with Merlin and hope it could develop into an annual event.

They say they are delighted with the response so far and are confident that the show with Daniels will be a sell-out.

Chamber of commerce chairman Ron Mounsey said: "The Lyric Theatre would have been our first choice, but we didn't expect it to be available at short notice.

"We are delighted that they have kindly agreed to make the theatre available which is good news and will provide a more central venue."

He said without the change of venue many people would not have been able to see the magician who became a household name due to his television work.

Carmarthenshire council leader Meryl Gravell said: "The Merlin, Magic and Mystery Festival promises to be a fantastic event with something for all ages.
