Rhys Livsey had been waiting for his money for four weeks |
A saver who tried to transfer 24,000 from the UK arm of an Icelandic bank four weeks ago has finally received his money. Rhys Livsey, 29, from Cardiff, withdrew the cash from Kaupthing Edge a day before it was taken over by ING Direct after a financial crisis in Iceland. Mr Livsey had been told his money "had been held up". But while checking his account over the weekend, Mr Livsey discovered his money had been transferred. "I can relax a bit now. I had a look on Saturday and it must've gone in late on Friday," he said. "I've been looking on a daily basis at least twice a day. It was just getting really annoying." The BBC news website had highlighted Mr Livsey's difficulties in getting his money transferred. "I had a look on the internet and it was just there. It must be something to do with the story," he said. He is now trying to recover the four weeks-worth of interest from the money, which he believes will be around 80 to 100. Mr Livsey, who works as a personal assistant to actor and performer John Barrowman, had decided to move his money, a total of 24,067, after reading reports of problems with the bank. He made the transfer to another account on 6 October. The money cleared from his Edge instant access savings account on 7 October but had failed to arrive in the other account. Kaupthing Edge, an online UK subsidiary of Iceland's Kaupthing bank, was taken over by ING Direct on 8 October, and guaranteed all the deposits held in the bank. A spokesperson for ING Direct said: "Since that time [8 October] we've processed a backlog of 57,000 payments. The vast, vast majority of people now have the money in their accounts." He said there were around 750 customers still waiting for payments at the start of last week but they would almost all be processed by Tuesday.
