Arrests after paramedics attacked
Ambulance (generic)
The paramedic crew were bitten as they attended the call-out
Two teenagers have been arrested after a paramedic crew were attacked and their ambulance vandalised while answering an emergency call.

Police said the two offences were separate, but both happened as the crew were at a house in Ely, Cardiff.

A 16-year-old girl was arrested after a paramedic and trainee technician were bitten in what ambulance chiefs called a "particularly nasty attack".

A boy of 16 was arrested after a brick was thrown through the vehicle window.

South Wales Police said the girl was taken to Llandough Hospital, near Penarth, where she was given treatment.

The boy, meanwhile, is in custody being questioned on suspicion of criminal damage.

Our staff are highly trained people who are there to do a job in the community... they're not there to be targets for anyone
Mike Cassidy, deputy chief executive of the Welsh Ambulance Service

The assault happened at about 2200 GMT on Tuesday.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A paramedic and trainee technician both suffered bites and were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, where they were treated for minor injuries but not detained.

"A group of youths smashed the side window on the new emergency ambulance and it will now be out of action while it is repaired.

"If anyone has any information on an attack on ambulance staff then they should contact the police immediately."

The attack follows an incident across the city in Grangetown last month when several youths tried to board an ambulance and assaulted the crew who were trying to treat a young man.

Mike Cassidy, deputy chief executive of the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: "This latest incident was a particularly nasty and unpleasant attack which has left two of our staff needing treatment.

"Incidents of violence and abuse towards ambulance staff are a matter of great concern for the trust and we would ask the public to inform the police.

"Our staff are highly trained people who are there to do a job in the community. They're not there to be targets for anyone."

Police asked anyone with information to call 029 2022 2111.
