CWL has blamed increasingly competitive markets

Carrington Wire Limited (CWL), which has been based at East Moors in Cardiff for the last 20 years, has blamed competition from abroad.

It makes wire products for the construction and automotive industries.

The Yorkshire-based firm is consolidating its UK operations and is concentrating on its factory in Leeds, while closing in Cardiff in December.

A spokeswoman said the company was working with unions, the Welsh Assembly Government and a training company to assist workers.

A 90-day consultation on the future of the plant began in June, but the final decision was announced on Thursday.

'Work ethic'

The firm became part of a larger Russian group last year.

"This operational restructuring is necessary for Carrington Wire Limited to strengthen its presence in increasingly competitive markets," said chief executive Andrew Parker.

He said he wanted to express his "respect and gratitude for the professional manner in which our Cardiff colleagues continue to conduct themselves."

Mr Parker added: "Their knowledge, commitment and work ethic continues to provide a benchmark for the group."

It is the second jobs blow for the city on Thursday, with the announcement that the old Freeman's cigar factory in Grangetown is to close in two years with the loss of 185 jobs.
