Temporary school for flood pupils

Pupils may not return to the main building until the end of year
A school which was damaged by flash flooding in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan is due to re-open for pupils on Monday if it passes final safety checks.

The extent of the flood damage has required an entirely new temporary school to be built on the site of Oak Field Primary School.

It was one of four schools damaged in July's floods, but the only one remaining which had not re-opened.

The Vale of Glamorgan council apologised for the delay.

The authority said that all of the pupils in the other schools affected had returned to lessons by Wednesday.

Temporary classrooms have been erected at St Richard Gwyn High, Gwaun Y Nant and part of Bryn Hafren Comprehensive as a temporary solution.

Building work on the temporary school at Oak Field Primary had been completed and safety checks undertaken, but the school would not be able to re-open until the results of final checks were known, said a spokesman for the council.

"Health and safety"

Director of learning and development Bryan Jeffreys said the delay in the opening of the school was "disappointing for all who have worked so hard during the last two months".

"I wish to apologise to parents and pupils for the delay but am sure that it will be understood, especially by parents, that the health and safety of pupils has to be our prime consideration," he said.

In August, the authority said the level of repair work needed at the four schools meant it could be the end of the year before pupils are allowed back into the main buildings.

Further information regarding opening arrangements at Oak Field Primary School would be communicated to parents on Friday, added the spokesman.
