Puppy found with hanging wounds
Marina McInness and the dog
Marina McInness found the dog in a distressed state
A puppy has been rescued after being found with "terrible" neck wounds which the RSPCA believes indicate she had been hanged.

Marina and Stewart McInness, from South Africa, were on holiday near Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, when they found the German shepherd pup.

The couple noticed a rope was bound tightly around her neck and discovered three gaping sores underneath.

They took the dog, nicknamed Jackie, to the RSPCA, which is looking after her.

The couple found the "clearly distressed" eight-month-old near the Chain Bridge in Usk Road in Penpergwm, near Abergavenny.

After unsuccessfully trying to find its owner by calling at nearby farms, they took her back to where they were staying.

While they washed the dog, they discovered the blue nylon rope was embedded in her neck, where there were three injuries.

The RSPCA said they took to a local vet, who confirmed that someone had tried to hang her.

Closer examination revealed older scar tissue, suggesting previous attempts to hang her more than once.

Inspections also showed that although she is young, she has already given birth.

The dog is now being cared for by animal fosterer Matt Doubtfire and her condition has dramatically improved.

Ms McInness said: "When an animal gives you its trust, it's an honour.

"I felt a sense of obligation to help Jackie, in the same way that you would help a small child or an elderly person.

"I'd like to see more people comfortable with doing this sort of thing without just walking away."

Anyone with information can call the RSPCA in confidence on 08705 555999.
