Stars' smiles hide golf rivalry

The two-day event, pitching Hollywood A-listers against British showbiz and sports stars, is hosted by Ant and Dec.

Golfing legend Colin Montgomerie heads Team Europe, who are defending last year's inaugural tournament title.

Entrants include DJ Chris Evans, rock legend Alice Cooper, entertainer Bruce Forsyth and footballer Ruud Gullit.

The Northern Rock All Star Cup 2006 again sees celebrities from both sides of the Atlantic putting their golf swing to work for charity.

Competitors held a practice session on Saturday, at which Forsyth, 78, the oldest in the tournament, won a diamond pendant worth �10,000 when he won the nearest-the-pin contest.

The TV star, who intends to donate the pendant to his chosen charity, said: "It was just a lucky shot. It was from about 100 yards and I was around eight foot short.

"Actually, it was uphill, the wind was blowing, the rain was in my face...it was a lucky shot really."

He added: "Golf is very similar to dancing. You have to use your edge, you have to use your knees and you turn your shoulders."

The evening saw a gala dinner for the celebrity guests, including Meatloaf and Seymour, where dozens of autograph hunters gathered at the entrance of the hotel.

Grammy award-winning Meat Loaf, who plays off a handicap of 24, took a break from recording Bat Out of Hell III to take part in the competition.

Seymour fills the final vacancy on the American team.

Other competitors include EastEnders actor Ross Kemp, singer Ronan Keating, actor James Nesbitt, former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright and Dallas star Patrick Duffy.

The event is broadcast live on ITV 1, with comedian Ronnie Corbett providing the commentary.

Last year's televised event featured married couple Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas on opposing teams.
