A&E shuts for chemical burns man
Neville Hall Hospital, Abergavenny
The man was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital with severe burns
A hospital accident and emergency unit in south Wales had to be closed after a man was brought in with severe chemical-related burns on Friday.

The man, 35, was rescued by firefighters from a house in Ebbw Vale and taken to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

The unit was closed for an hour from 0715 BST as a safety precaution due to potential chemical contamination.

Police are investigating how the man was burnt.

The man was taken to the hospital at about 0715 BST with burns to his body after specialist fire crews were called to the house in Ebbw Vale.

Unknown chemical

The hospital closed its accident and emergency department as a precaution to prevent cross-contamination of the unknown chemical to other patients and staff.

The man has since been transferred to a specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

Julian Hayman from Gwent NHS Trust said: "The unit was closed for about an hour after a man as brought in with severe burns.

"We had to close the unit because he was contaminated with chemicals and we didn't know what chemicals they were so shut the unit as a safety precaution.

"The unit has been reopened to the walking wounded and will reopen completely soon."

Gwent Police have said they are carrying out inquiries in Ebbw Vale to establish how the man was injured.

Any person with information is asked to contact Gwent Police on 01633 838111 or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
