Vigil-line for cancer protester

A cancer drug protester is to launch a telephone line for 24 hours to invite women who have had chemotherapy for breast cancer to contact her.

Jayne Sullivan would like fellow cancer sufferers to contact the Herceptin vigil-line so that she can pass on details to Wales' health minister.

The 45-year-old wants to see the drug available to all breast cancer sufferers in Wales.

The line will be open until 1200 GMT on Tuesday.

Ms Sullivan is urging any woman who has finished chemotherapy for breast cancer in the last three months and not been offered or had a test for Herceptin to contact her leaving their name and home town.

Recent research in the US has suggested the risk of tumours recurring with certain types of breast cancer can be cut by up to 50% if Herceptin is taken in the early stages of the disease.

There is a drug that's being used in America, Europe and India, why isn't it available for women in Wales?

"Some people are not aware of the test and not aware of the drug," she said.

"These are the women who the system is failing. This issue is not about my situation, Velindre [Hospital] has treated me well.

"But women are unaware of the postcode lottery for Herceptin and unaware that tumours need to be tested.

'Postcode lottery'

"I want to be able to present the data to the health minister Brian Gibbons when I meet him on," said the mother-of-two from Old St Mellons, Cardiff.

A meeting is planned for 20 February between her and Dr Gibbons, and Ann Lloyd, the director of health and social care in Wales.

"I feel so strongly about this postcode lottery and I have every intention to meet my objectives.

"Time is of the essence and trials show that Herceptin administered nine to 12 weeks after chemo gets its best results," Ms Sullivan added.

"There is a drug that's being used in America, Europe and India, why isn't it available for women in Wales?"

The vigil line will be staffed by supporters and will be split into two-hour shifts.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2005, Ms Sullivan underwent surgery and chemotherapy with HER 2 grade three positive tumours.

She started her campaign on 1 February with a seven day sit-in at the foyer of the former assembly building, Crickhowell House.

During the sit-in, she said her health had started to deteriorate due to the air conditioning and Ms Sullivan said she also felt she was being "embroiled in party politics".

At present in the UK, Herceptin is only routinely prescribed on the NHS to women with advanced breast cancer.

The vigil line number is 07967 733927
