Work on a multimillion pound Cardiff city centre redevelopment, which will include a John Lewis department store, has begun. It is hoped construction of the �535m St David's 2 retail development scheme will be completed by Christmas 2008.
As part of the plans, a number of shops, bars and restaurants and a state of the art new library will also be built.
Parking for around 3,000 cars will also be made available.
Developers say that 1,000 workers will be involved in the construction and a further 2,000 permanent jobs would be created on completion.
The development will see shops, restaurants, bars and 300 apartments set around squares and arcades over 1m sq ft.

The existing St David's shopping centre will be expanded.

The Hayes area will also be remodelled.
Several buildings in the area around The Hayes will be demolished to make way for the new centre, including Cardiff Central Library, the Wales National Ice Rink, the Toys R Us building and Oxford Arcade.
The developers, Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres and Cardiff Council hope that the new development will transform the centre of the city and turn it into one of the top retail destinations in Europe.
Speaking earlier this year, Cardiff council leader Rodney Berman said: "We are committed to working closely with the St David's 2 Partnership to help deliver this major retail scheme, which will be a valuable asset to Cardiff's city centre and of significant benefit to shoppers, workers and residents."
