Partygoers tried out a period jeep for comfort

The Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans, Cardiff, is hosting a "wedding" from the period, including a bride with a dress made from parachute silk.

Over in Swansea Bay, a 1940s street party celebrating the end of the fighting is being held.

Events are running in both places on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

At St Fagans, the whole grounds were being transformed into a giant "Home Front" village.

Food from the time, including the delights of spam fritters, are being served at an outdoor party.

Staff dressed as an air raid warden, evacuee, land girl, a soldier on leave and the home guard are circulating to revive memories for those old enough to remember the time and answer questions for the younger generations.

This year, the museum's traditional raising of the May pole at the grounds will take place in the midst of a wedding, with the May Queen dressed as a civilian bride marrying her soldier fianc� in a wedding dress made from parachute silk.

On Monday, the celebrations will focus on a street party, serving food and playing games typical of the period.

Nazi bombing

Over in Swansea, a newly opened attraction, 1940s Swansea Bay, is also getting into the spirit of VE day over the bank holiday weekend.

The centre is dedicated to the history of the area during World War II, highlighting the damage caused to the city by Nazi bombing, as well as the day-to-day lives of citizens during the years of conflict.

Huw Thomas, one of the site's owners, said: "As the 60th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe gets nearer, we thought what better than to have an authentic street party.
