Work has begun on a 150m redevelopment of the Old Town Dock area near the centre of Newport, south Wales.

Derelict land will be turned into housing, restaurants and a business district by developers.

It is one of 60 projects planned for the city over the next five years, which could create 4,000 jobs overall.

Plans have already been put forward to revitalise shopping in the city centre, including a Debenhams store and a new shopping mall.

The work is being carried out by urban regeneration company Newport Unlimited.

Welsh Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies was at the site to watch the first phase of 1.5m reclamation work on the area, funded by the Welsh Development Agency.

The work will convert the area into a "southern gateway neighbourhood", according to the company, with 1,500 houses and flats, a business district, an 80-room hotel, shops, restaurants, bars and cafes.

The University of Wales College Newport is also planning to build a new site in the city centre to house art, media and design schools on the banks of the River Usk.

The new campus should open by 2008.
