Jobs worry at extinguisher plant

Chubb management may offer work at other plants
A fire extinguisher factory in the south Wales valleys may close, with the loss of 150 jobs.

Workers at Chubb Fire Ltd, at Ferndale in the Rhondda, were told about the plans to move work to China on Tuesday.

The company said it was only a proposal and no decision had been taken.

But it admitted that the market was "very competitive" and the move would be cost effective.

The fire extinguisher factory first opened under the old Pyrene company in 1950.

Melvyn Smith, the plant's manufacturing director, said there would be a consultation period and a decision would be expected in about six to eight weeks.

He added that if the factory did close, then there would be support for the workers.

He said: "We don't have fire extinguisher manufacturing plants elsewhere in the UK but we do have other plants.

"There may be options for retraining that we would look at very seriously, also retraining to find other jobs elsewhere if necessary."

The company cut 65 jobs three years ago, blaming competition from overseas.
