Oliver's paintings portray life in the valleys

The Lostprophets band member is one of a number of artists whose work is featured in the show called Changing Moods of the Rhondda.

Oliver, 28, is currently touring America with the band, whose latest single is called Last Summer.

The exhibition is at Rhondda Heritage Park in Trehafod.

Oliver, who is also known by his second name Jamie when he is in the band, is one of six members of Pontypridd based, Lostprophets.

The band is enjoying UK chart success with its single Last Summer and album Start Something.

But as well as being a key member of one of Wales' top rock bands, Oliver, a fine art graduate, is also an acclaimed artist.

And he was one of five artists were invited to take part in the exhibition on Rhondda life.

Jan Pennell who is the gallery co-ordinator said that despite being busy with his musical career, Oliver had taken time out to attend a private viewing of the collection on display.

"He had come back to do Top of the Pops and turned up at the private viewing in his kilt - all the girls loved it," she said.

"He is an exceptionally talented artist."

She said that Oliver's paintings in the exhibition examined the culture of young people growing up in the valleys.

"It fits in with the title of the exhibition - Changing Moods of the Rhondda -because all the artists feature different views," she said.

Several canvases created by Oliver are in the show which runs until 17 October.

The other artists featured in the exhibition are Ceri Barclay, Chris Griffin, Elwyn Thomas and Gwyn Evans.

"All I can say about Richard Oliver is - what a talent," said Ms Pennell.

"He has done a mural for us in the heritage park which is on permanent display.
