An event to forge links between asylum seekers and the local community in Newport is being staged for a second time.

Welsh Refugee Council translator Tarek Samad, who was behind the first party last year, says he has been overwhelmed by calls for another show.

A second event to encourage local people to mix with asylum seekers and refugees is planned next month.

"It is about integration and friendship," said Mr Samad.

"It is a great way of getting different members of the community to get to know one another."

A similar party was held last August and Mr Samad said he has received dozens of calls from people asking when the next would be.

"People have been so enthusiastic about the opportunity to get to know each other in an environment which is designed to be fun and safe.

"I've had calls from people who have lived in Newport for years and years and from others who have only lived here for a short time.

"From the last event I have heard how people who were too nervous to speak to someone who was not like them becoming friends," he added.

Mr Samad is now organising the next event in the city and says that his project has attracted the attention of other groups across the UK who have asked him for advice in staging similar events.

"It is all about mixing together and bridging that divide so that we can have a community which is united," said Mr Samad.
