Among the things put out for recycling are kitchen sinks |
Recycling is becoming one of the favoured ways of getting rid of household rubbish, but what exactly are we throwing into the green bags? One south Wales council has compiled a top ten of the strangest items found by recycling staff.
And everything from kitchen sinks to ammunition has been recovered by workers from Newport Council.
Staff are continually finding odd objects alongside traditional recycling materials such as newspapers and cans.
Mike Croxford, the general manager for Wastesavers which runs the recycling programme in the city, said that staff were "astonished" by some of the finds.

"We want to take as much recycling as we can from the people of Newport - but only if it can actually be recycled," he said.
"The recycling team have been astonished by some of the things they've found.
"Some of them were expensive things in good condition that someone else could have made use of.
He said that staff could only collect things that could reprocessed and turned into something else.
"It is important that people remember the reuse message of the three Rs [reduction, reuse and recycling] as these things will only end up at the landfill site otherwise," he said.

According to Waste Watch, more than 430 million tonnes of rubbish is produced in the UK per year.
The majority of this comes from industrial processes and business, with over 25 million tonnes being created in our homes.
In Newport, a new pilot scheme is about to start, in which 9,000 homes in the city will be offered weekly recycling collections and fortnightly rubbish collections.
