A man accused of cutting off a greyhound's ears and leaving the dog to die on a south Wales mountainside has denied carrying out the attack. Andrew Gough from Blackwood pleaded not guilty to cruelly ill-treating an animal at the town's magistrates court.
On Monday, Mr Gough, 28, was released on conditional bail and the case was adjourned for four weeks.
A number of animal rights protestors attended the hearing, packing the public gallery.
Outside the court, demonstrators brought along a rescued greyhound and held placards protesting.
In May, the RSPCA revealed that the dog, Last Hope, had its ears cut off and had been shot in the head, possibly with a nail gun.
It is thought that the dog's ears, probably tattooed, had been cut off to stop identification.
The black and white animal was found "extremely distressed" by a member of the public out walking their dog on 2 May on mountainside between Fochriw and Bargoed in the Rhymney valley.
The dog was taken to a vet and put down.
