Walk success for amputee
Lorain Hodson
Lorain Hodson has clear cell sarcoma affecting her heart and leg
A woman who had her leg amputated after cancer has achieved a personal triumph by walking from England to Wales.

Lorain Hodson, 38, from Chepstow, walked the furthest she had done for three years when she trekked across the old Severn Bridge on Boxing Day.

Although fitted with an artificial leg, she normally uses a wheelchair to get around, so taking on the walk was a major challenge.

She began the two-mile challenge, walking from the English side of the bridge into Wales on Friday morning, and completed the journey in 3hrs 20 mins.

As well as achieving her aim, she also raised 1,000 in sponsorship money for Velindre Hospital in Cardiff, where she has been receiving treatment.

Speaking at home on Friday evening, Mrs Hodson's husband, Roger, said she was delighted, but tired, after completing the challenge.

"She did really well, but she's very sore now," he said.

"She came in, took her leg off, and put her nightie on," he added. "She really needed a rest."

Before setting off on her journey, mother-of-two Mrs Hodson was determined to succeed.

"It is the first time I have walked that far in three years," she said.

Mrs Hodson has clear cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer which has affected her leg and her heart.

She has had the condition for seven years and is currently receiving her second round of chemotherapy.

The family are awaiting the results of a scan to see if the chemo is having any effect on the slow-growing tumour in her heart.

"I just live with it now and take every day as it comes," she said.

Joining her on her trek were relatives including her husband and teenage children Chris and Amy.

She had already been promised 600 in sponsorship which will go to Velindre Hospital, where she has been treated regularly since being diagnosed with cancer seven years ago.
