Cardiff Bay has been hailed by windsurfers

Up to 12 university windsurfing clubs took part in the two-day national event on Saturday and Sunday.

If the competition is successful, organisers hope it will pave the way for further watersport events.

This is the second year that competitive, sponsored windsurfing has been staged in Cardiff, organised by the city's university and Cardiff Harbour Authority.

After last year's event, which was switched from Llandegfedd reservoir, near Pontypool, the clubs declared the Bay to be a "world-class" location for the sport, with flat water, constant wind off the sea and a large surface area.

"We are very excited at being able to use Cardiff Bay again - we could not wish for a better venue and conditions are ideal," said Emma Thain, president of Cardiff University Windsurfing Club.

There were competitions for advanced and intermediate windsurfers during the weekend, including an inter-university relay race on Sunday.

The Cardiff University club will give 10 per cent of its proceeds from the competition to Surfers Against Sewage, an organisation fighting marine pollution.

"This is a prestigious event which we are delighted to host for the second year, and which we hope will become an annual attraction to Cardiff Bay," said councillor Marion Drake.
