Joseph Parry composed the Welsh classic Myfanwy

Doctor Joseph Parry penned some of Wales' best loved pieces including the love song Myfanwy and the hymn tune Aberystwyth.

Now, children's choirs from across Merthyr Tydfil where he was born, held a special commemoration service to remember the composer.

They performed a number of his works at St Tydfil's Church in the town on Sunday.

The Reverend Meurig Llwyd Williams led the service.

"It is something to celebrate the life and works of Joseph Parry," he said.

"He is considered to be one of the biggest composer in Wales.

"And this is a way of coming together to celebrate what he did.

"One of the most important parts of his legacy is his hymn tunes and the children are planning to sing some of them.

"I think it is going to be something to remember," he added.

Joseph Parry was born in Merthyr in 1841 before emigrating to America with his family at the age of 13.

But he returned to Wales where he became the Professor of Music at the University of Wales from 1873 - 1877.

He lived and wrote some of his best works including a large number of works including operas, piano pieces, choral compositions and a host of hymn tunes in Aberystwyth, Swansea and Cardiff.

He died in 1903 in Penarth, where he is buried at St Augustine's Church.
