Opera role for schoolboy singers
Dyfed Cynan and James Jones
The boys will sing at Covent Garden

Two schoolboy singers have been chosen to take a starring role in a critically acclaimed opera in London's West End.

Dyfed Cynan, 12 and 11-year-old James Jones were selected for a part in the new production, Gwyneth and the Green Knight, at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Theatre in Covent Garden.

The boys, who both live in Cardiff, will take on the role of Mordred in the performance which is being staged by the Royal Opera House with the Music Theatre Wales.

They will take turns to play the part during the four day run, which opens on Thursday.

Dyfed Cynan, who goes to Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf School and has taken part in a number of singing competitions, is looking forward to the opening night of the show.

"There are a lot of singers in my family and I really enjoy singing," he said.

"I am looking forward to the performance and I hope my voice will be ok.

"I am singing on the first and last night of the show in London.

"All my friends are jealous about me coming up to London to sing but they are all supporting me," he added.

James Jones, who goes to St John's College, will be taking on the role on the second and third nights of the show.

"Singing is a hobby I really enjoy," he said.

"I am glad I am not doing the first show but on the second day that is when all the school children will be watching so that is going to be quite nerve wracking.

"Maybe I will take up singing as a career, I'm not sure yet.

"My family are all supporting me and are coming to watch me," he added.

Support

The boys, who have had to take an extended Easter break for rehearsals, have received the support of their schools.

Huw Thomas, Dyfed's headmaster, said: "We are absolutely delighted for Dyfed and we wish him all the best."

James' headmaster Dr David Neville, was also full of praise for his pupil.

"We are so pleased to support James and his success in gaining a major role in this production.

"He has a great future and we are 100% behind him," he added.
