Shops complex planned for island
Ty Mawr plans
The plans would include shops and a multiplex cinema
Plans for a shopping and leisure complex on Anglesey, potentially offering 1300 jobs, have been unveiled.

The 57 acre development, at Ty Mawr between Llanfairpwll and Menai Bridge, would include dozens of shops, a multiplex cinema and ten pin bowling.

Some local people are unhappy and say the plans would effectively link the village of Llanfairpwll with Menai Bridge half a mile (0.8km) away.

The Welsh Assembly Government said the scheme could boost the local economy.

Anglesey councillors will discuss the plans next week.

Objectors claim the planning process is being pushed through too quickly.

Two previous applications, in 1994 and 1997, for a leisure complex which would have included family activities, a petrol station and roadside services were turned down, with the second application going as far as a public inquiry.

The Welsh Development Agency then commissioned a report in 2003 which concluded an environmental impact survey would be needed before any development was given the go-ahead.

'Job opportunities'

Local resident Gwynne Owen said he was worried at the speed with which the latest plans were being put forward.

"At the end of the (public) inquiry the inspectors said that there should be no development on this greenfield site and then within six weeks of that the county council had changed its mind entirely - you have to ask why," he said.

Anglesey's Economic Development Officer Sasha Davies said the full planning process would be followed.

"No decision has been taken by the council and there will be a full consultation over the coming year," she said.

A spokesman for the Welsh Assembly Government said: "When completed the development would provide the potential for a minimum of 1,300 jobs within an area which has the highest unemployment level in north Wales.

"In addition up to 500 jobs would be created during the construction phase."

Developers Ynys Mon Estates LLP said they would release a statement on Wednesday.
