Fire officers have urged people to fit smoke detectors after a pensioner died from severe burns following a fire at his home in Gwynedd. The 74-year-old was being treated at Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital after fire fighters rescued him from his bedroom shortly after midday on Thursday.
His wife escaped uninjured from the house in Llanaelhaearn near Pwllheli.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it would install smoke alarms in pensioners' homes for free.
The fire service's legislation manger Gareth Wyn Griffiths said there were no smoke detectors in the property.
"Smoke detectors give an early warning signal which can allow people to escape life threatening fire without injury.
"We offer free home safety checks for all residents in north Wales and, if necessary, fit new smoke alarms free of charge."
North Wales Police said they were not treating the fire as suspicious and details of the incident had been passed to the coroner.
