The roof over the stage collapsed in high winds overnight |
Strong winds have damaged a stage for an open-air concert for BBC Children in Need, but organisers say they are confident the show will go ahead. It left preparation work behind schedule for Friday's performance in Colwyn Bay, Conwy, with acts such as Jamelia, Ronan Keating, and The Alarm.
The roof of the structure collapsed at about midnight after three "freak" gusts of wind. No-one was injured.
The BBC said staff were working hard to rectify the situation.
The third gust of wind created most damage, and an oak tree was also bought down nearby.
The stage used for the production is built to withstand normal windy conditions.
Producer Jonathan Davies said: "It was a freak accident due to excessive weather conditions and wind in particular. It is a minor setback to the schedule.
"There is no danger to the artists taking part or to the public.
"The concert is too important for both Children in Need and the town of Colwyn Bay for us not to make every effort to get everything back on track. The show must go on."
The 10,000 free tickets for the event - which is produced in association with Conwy Borough Council and the Events Commission - have all been snapped up.
It is the only concert of this year's BBC Children in Need appeal, and is due to be featured on BBC One and BBC One Wales.
