Drug needle machine alternative
Colwyn Bay police station
The machine will be sited outside the town's police station
Controversial plans for a needle machine for drug addicts outside a police station may be withdrawn.

It follows a needle exchange facility being set up at a pharmacy in Colwyn Bay.

North Wales chief constable Richard Brunstrom had accused opponents of being "Nimbys".

A force spokeswoman said if there were an efficient alternative provision they would reconsider with the partner agencies the need to provide a machine.

Mr Brunstrom was in favour of placing a machine on the back wall of Colwyn Bay police station in the town centre.

Darren Millar, a member of Conwy Council and also of the police authority, said he was pleased that Mr Brunstrom was now prepared to consider withdrawing the planning application.

Mr Millar said the exchange facility in the local Boots store clearly mitigated the need for this kind of machine.

He said he was against facilities, which could be seen as giving the green light from the police to undertake criminal activities.

The 10,000 vending machine would be imported from Australia and would require planning permission from Conwy council.

The idea was criticised by some drugs charities but Mr Brunstrom said the machine would help drug addicts lacking facilities in the area.
