Westlife sell out at 'Bryn-fest'

Westlife's show on Friday was a 12,000 sell-out
A sell-out show from boy band Westlife and Welsh diva Shirley Bassey have been the highlights of this year's Faenol festival.

The four-day event, nicknamed 'Bryn-fest' because of opera singer Bryn Terfel's involvement, is now in its seventh year.

Terfel himself performed in the opera gala night on Saturday.

The Proclaimers will be one of the acts performing at the Tan y Ddraig (Dragon's Fire) finale on Monday night.

The festival, on the country estate between Caernarfon and Bangor, opened on Friday night with a performance by superstar Irish band Westlife.

All 12,000 tickets were snapped up, which organisers said was the most they had sold for a single concert at the festival.

"People now put the festival in their diaries, book accommodation and bring their picnics," said Terfel.

"This year for the first time the tickets went on sale eight months beforehand and this has been a positive thing because we've been able to see what the figures will be and some nights are selling out," he added.

The line-up for Saturday night's gala included international stars Angela Gheorghiu and Rolando Villazon.

Cardiff-born singer Shirley Bassey headlined on Sunday night with her first concert in north Wales since her sell-out performance at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod's gala in 2003.

The festival will close with the Tan y Ddraig (Dragon's Fire) concert featuring Anweledig, Scottish duo The Proclaimers as well as Elin Fflur, Dyfrig Evans and Huw Jones.

Before last year's festival, North Wales Police issued a warning about underage drinking but a ban on alcohol for those under 21 had proved a success, organisers said.

The festival expanded from three nights to four in 2005 and Terfel has ambitions to extend the event to a full week.

"It would include two weekends and we'd need more artists, and it would be a chance to use this fantastic location," said Terfel.

Top acts which Terfel would still like to see perform at future Faenol Festivals include Sir Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti and Sir Tom Jones.

The BBC is recording the whole festival. The Opera Gala and Tan y Ddraig will then be shown on S4C while the other performances will be shown on BBC Wales.
