The man was taken off Snowdon after a suspected heart attack

Around 15 members of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team were called to help with the emergency just before 1200 GMT on Thursday.

North Wales Police confirmed the man, who was aged 59 and was walking with a friend, died at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

Police said the helicopter could not be used in the rescue due to bad weather conditions.

The mountain rescue team assisted with the operation to reach the man who was on the Llanberis path when he complained of chest pains.

A special train was laid on for the team members to reach the man who had just gone past Hebron station, around a quarter of the way to the summit.

Llanberis rescue team secretary Ian Henderson said using the train enabled the members to take more equipment up the mountain.

The alert was the first since nine climbers were rescued in Snowdonia in two separate operations last weekend which were also hampered by bad weather.

At that time, two men and two women were found stranded in low cloud, mist, and rain around midnight on Sunday. They had called for help at 1530 GMT on Saturday.

Atrocious conditiions

Just three hours after that rescue, five people - stuck on a ledge - were led to safety.

The atrocious conditions meant both rescues had to be carried out on foot.

The party of four were found by a search and rescue dog and 20 members of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team on Glyder Fawr.

The other five were found by Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team on Snowdon.
