Footballer follows family tradition
Gareth Dogan
Gareth Dogan hopes to break into the Bangor City team
A footballer is hoping to set a possible record when he becomes the fourth generation of his family to play for his local team.

Gareth Dogan, 20, will follow his father Christopher, grandfather Eddie and great-grandfather Thomas if selected for Bangor City FC this season.

All three played for the side at the Farrar Road Stadium, although Christopher only played for the reserve team.

Dogan was not selected for City's first game of the season, a 6-0 win over Llanelli in the Welsh Premier on Saturday, but he has the entire 2004-5 campaign to continue the family tradition.

Eddie Dogan said he could not believe the family's achievement.

"I was born and bred in Bangor, so Bangor has always been in my heart," he said.

"I was delighted when Christopher started playing for the reserves and he showed tremendous promise at the time.

"Gareth was encouraged by his dad to get involved in football.

"He was continually out every day playing football - it takes me back to when I was young."

'Good for football'

Huw Pritchard, of Bangor City FC, said he could not guarantee that Gareth would be picked.

"It is up to the manager to pick the team," he said.

"We are glad local lads such as Gareth are challenging for first team places.

"At a time when we too often read and hear about the negative sides of football, it is good to be able to remember many clubs maintain and encourage strong local links.

"It can only be good for Bangor City and for Welsh football in general."

A spokesman for Guinness Book of Records said there was no current world record of consecutive generations playing for the same team.

"It's possible pending research and authorisation that it could be a Guinness world record," he said.

But the spokesman could not confirm it would be a record category, and said the fact that Gareth's father had only played for the reserves could be a stumbling block.
