Councillor's writ over 'poor policing'

Jeff Evans argues that police fail to respond to public need

A leading councillor in Holyhead is taking legal action against the head of North Wales Police over what he claims is poor policing in the area.

Jeff Evans, deputy mayor of the Anglesey town, said he was suing chief constable Richard Brunstrom for just over 200 in the small claims court - the amount he has paid for policing in his council tax in the last two years.

But North Wales Police defended their record, saying there were more officers on the beat.

I want to see improved services which should be maximised for the public and I want to stand and be counted

Speaking as a private individual, Mr Evans made his views known at the meeting in Gwynedd Council chambers on Monday night.

He said he was pursuing two years' police payments, amounting to 98 and 124, which were added automatically to his council tax bill.

"The police fail to respond to public needs, they failed to respond to telephone calls and people no longer feel safe," he said.

"I want to see improved services which should be maximised for the public and I want to stand and be counted."

In a statement, a force spokesman said: "North Wales Police know nothing about any writ served by Councillor Evans who has seen fit to go to the media immediately.

"On the other hand, North Wales Police will respond to the writ having given its content due proper and serious consideration."
