An electrical cable firm and a furniture maker are creating 55 manufacturing jobs on Anglesey.

Marco Cable Management Systems will bring 40 jobs to Llangefni Industrial Park, manufacturing power cables for schools and offices.

And a further 15 jobs will be created at Gaerwen by Irish furniture-making company PressPanels.

Anglesey Council's Head of Economic Development, Huw Griffiths, said the jobs were a vote of confidence in the island.

We were looking for a location where we can tap into a skilled and loyal workforce

He added: "The creation of 55 new jobs on Anglesey may not seem a large figure in the scheme of things, but in the current climate it is a real statement of confidence in our island and its people.

"We are delighted that all the hard work done by ourselves and other agencies has paid off and we hope that this sends a clear message to potential investors."

Both companies received regional selective assistance grants from the Welsh Assembly Government and further support from the Welsh Development Agency (WDA) and Anglesey council.

'Renewed confidence'

Welsh Economic Development Minister, Andrew Davies, said: "This is good news for the economy of Anglesey and I am pleased that the assembly government and the WDA have been instrumental in creating these jobs.

"I visited Anglesey last month to discuss many of the economic issues facing the island.

"I was pleased to see the renewed confidence in the strength of the local economy, helped by the drop in unemployment on Anglesey."

Sean Ryan, managing director of PressPanels, added: "We were looking for a location similar to where our existing facilities exist in Ireland, where we can tap into a skilled and loyal workforce.

"North Wales has just that and we've been impressed by the level of support provided to us by the local community."

Anglesey has suffered job loss announcements in recent months.

'Strong message'

FAUN Municipal Vehicles, in Llangefni, made 30 workers last month.

And around 100 jobs are hanging in the balance at the Great Lakes chemical plant, in Amlwch, after the company announced in September that it intends to shut the site.

The island's MP, Albert Owen, said it was an achievement to attract the new jobs at a time when manufacturing was in decline across the UK.

"This will send a strong message that Anglesey is the place to do business. We must build on this success for the future."
