In tune: Bryn Terfel at the school opening |
A slate plaque unveiled at a new Gwynedd school by opera star Bryn Terfel will have to be replaced because it contains a spelling mistake.
The world famous bass-baritone was the guest of honour at the official opening of the new primary school, Ysgol Eifion Wyn, in Porthmadog, last week.
But as soon as the plaque was unveiled the mistakes were discovered.
Gwynedd Council has apologised after it was discovered the slate plaque, believed to have cost around 400, actually had not one but two glaring errors.
The Welsh spelling of 'Cynghorydd', (Councillor) was missing the letter 'h' and the name of the chairman of the council was incomplete.
The plaque referred to R H Wyn Williams, from Abersoch as R H Williams, omitting Wyn.
Council officers failed to spot the error before passing on the engraving instructions to a local sign writer.
Councillor Williams confirmed that as soon as the two errors were spotted, he had ordered the replacement of the plaque.
The costs will be met by the council.
A spokeswoman said: "Everyone makes mistakes and Gwynedd council sincerely apologises to all concerned for the mis-spelling on the plaque.
"A correct version will be erected at the school as soon as possible."
She said she could not confirm if Terfel, who is from Pantglas, near Porthmadog, would be invited back to unveil the replacement plaque.
